Witness the best solar eclipse of this century from the beautiful hampshire countryside

On Wednesday 12 August 2026, the UK and Ireland will witness a remarkable celestial event: a partial solar eclipse, during which 90–96% of the Sun will be obscured by the Moon. At The Watercress Line, you can experience this spectacle from onboard a heritage steam train, from a secluded stretch of our heritage railway, far from crowds and light pollution.

A One-of-a-Kind Evening on the Railway

Arrive at 6pm at Alresford Station and step onboard one of our beautifully restored heritage trains. As you settle into your seat and the train pulls away at 6:15pm, our knowledgeable guide will share eclipse insights and fascinating stories about the railway’s history, all while you enjoy sweeping views of the Hampshire countryside, making for an unforgettable guided celestial experience.

Exclusive Eclipse Viewing Location

Midway through your journey, the train will pause to witness this phenomenon, in an area chosen specifically for its open skies and uninterrupted sightlines. Here, you’ll have time to take in the eclipse, with your very own Solar Eclipse Glasses (included in your ticket), as the landscape shifts into twilight, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

Concluding the Experience

After the eclipse reaches its peak, the train will complete the round trip back to Alresford Station, where the evening concludes at 8:30pm.

This is a rare chance to witness a major astronomical event from a truly unique vantage point: combining heritage travel, expert guidance, and the magic of the night sky.
