Evening Visits Available

Visit Ropley station after normal opening hours, explore the station, cross Kings Cross footbridge, get up close to the locomotives and see if you can complete the little locomotive STEM building challenge. Working together in teams, find out about the different parts that make up a steam locomotive, then build a battery powered mini version, present it to the rest of the group and see if it can reach the end of the test track!

Sessions are held on a evening to suit the needs of the group and are 1.5 hours long, £85 per group of a maximum of 35 young people.

Evening twilight visits are ideal and can link to a  range of different badges including local knowledge, photography and STEM and can link to railway safety.

Please email education@watercressline.co.uk for further information or to book.

We can also hold investitures for scouting, girl guiding groups and cadet groups at Ropley using our atmospheric spaces both inside the station masters parlour and outside on the platforms or even on Kings Cross Bridge!

Watercress Line Education Program:

Engaging Activities for Guides and Group Leaders

We’re thrilled to offer a range of exciting, hands-on experiences at the Watercress Line that perfectly align with the Girlguiding programme! Whether you’re looking for activities to inspire Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, or Rangers, our sessions are designed to captivate, educate, and provide an unforgettable journey into history, innovation, and adventure.

🚂 Operation Pied Piper: Escape to the Country!

Step back in time and experience life as an evacuee during WWII. This activity ties in beautifully with the Guides’ Wartime Guiding programme and gives girls a chance to explore the challenges and triumphs of children sent to the countryside. It’s a perfect way to tick off a programme activity while immersing them in a living history experience.

📚 Station Master Stories

All aboard for a captivating storytelling session! Discover the fascinating tales of the station masters and explore the vintage equipment used to keep the railway running. This session resonates across all Girlguiding sections, especially Rainbows, who can tie it into their Exciting Explorers activity, where they learn from inspiring people and their stories. Our storytelling sessions are always a hit and guaranteed to engage and inspire.

🌉 The Bridge Building Challenge

Put problem-solving and teamwork to the test! This hands-on challenge mirrors the Guides’ Bridging the Gap activity but eliminates the need for extensive resources, making it accessible and fun for all. Perfect for Guides and Rangers, this challenge encourages creativity, engineering skills, and collaboration – all while building connections and confidence.

🚂 All Aboard! The Little Locos Express

Climb aboard and experience the magic of a steam train adventure! A train ride is always a highlight for Girlguiding units, and this activity pairs wonderfully with the Rainbows’ Binocular Bingo adventure, where they create their own paper binoculars and explore the world around them. Whether it’s a first-time train ride or a chance to relive the magic, this is an experience that will leave lasting memories.

🧸 Teddy Takes the Train – A Railway Mystery

Bring your favorite teddy along for a delightful railway mystery! This adorable activity ties in perfectly with the Rainbows’ Teddy Travels and Story Trail adventures. Each teddy gets a special “passport” that gets stamped along the journey as they spot key landmarks. It’s a fun, interactive way to explore the railway while creating memories that the girls – and their teddies – will cherish.

🛠️ Little Locos Building Challenge

Get hands-on with innovation and design! This challenge connects with multiple Girlguiding activities: Brownies explore renewable energy, Rangers tackle Rover Racing, and all sections engage in activities focused on invention and experimentation. Our challenge encourages problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork, ticking all the right boxes for a fun and educational experience.
