Food and wine lovers can enjoy a first-class, gastronomic culinary experience on board a heritage steam train following the launch of the Watercress Line’s new fine dining service.
Well-loved TV broadcaster and gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh, MBE DL, special guest and Patron of the Watercress Line, cut the red ribbon to launch The Watercress Belle at Alresford Station, before getting on board to sample the exclusive new menu.
Alan said: “The Watercress Line’s wonderful new dining service on The Watercress Belle is a fantastic way to enjoy all the fine flavours of the produce that Hampshire is so famous for. All this on board the inviting ambience of a steam train that has been transformed into a first class restaurant travelling through glorious countryside.
“The Watercress Line has always been a jewel in north Hampshire’s crown – and it has now become even better!”
Diners toasted the inaugural journey with sparkling English wine from Alresford’s Hattingley Valley vineyard at an exclusive launch reception. Once on board, seated in the magnificently restored First Class dining carriages, amuses-bouche were served before a sumptuous locally sourced three course dinner followed by petit fours, all prepared by the chef at Lemon Stone Events and accompanied by quality wines from a carefully curated wine list.
The Watercress Line’s CEO Amanda Squires said: “We are delighted to launch the new Watercress Belle fine dining service combining superb food and wine with the style and nostalgia of the golden age of steam. It will offer a memorable and highly enjoyable experience to food lovers, steam enthusiasts and anyone wishing to dine in style.
“The 70-year-old train has been beautifully restored to create a warm atmosphere of original wooden interiors, with richly upholstered seats, cosy table lamps in the windows and tables elegantly set with white damask cloths – ready for diners to relax and sample some of Hampshire’s finest local food and wines.
