We have been putting a new volunteer leaflet together recently with publication due shortly. As part of this we have found a few gaps in our photo library and have been ‘doing the rounds’ taking suitable pictures. It’s been a great opportunity for me, as a newbie, to meet so many great volunteers.
But who am I? I’m Bob Melvin, a life-long railway enthusiast with paternal roots going back to the LSWR where my grandfather was a platelayer. Both my kids experienced their first rail travel on steam hauled services. My daughter on what was The Dart Valley and son on the Watercress Line. I’m now retired and looking to contribute towards the operating of the Watercress Line.
One of my earliest excursions was, unaccompanied at the tender age of 13, on The Flying Scotsman on a rail tour to Yorkshire and the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. (And Kirsty Allsop was in trouble for her son travelling at nearly 16!) I also had the privilege of meeting ‘Scotsman owner, Alan Pegler en route.
