Winter magic comes to The Watercress Line this festive season with the return of its ever-popular Steam Illuminations event, from 29 November 2024 to 4 January 2025.

The brand-new Snowlight Cascade will bring even more sparkle to the enchanting experience as the brightly-lit Steam Illuminations train transports passengers along the historic railway route for a truly memorable festive treat.

Twinkling coloured lights inside and outside the iconic steam train; festive fun and a cascade of delightful snowfall in the surrounding countryside will bring seasonal enchantment to the holidays like never before.

Rebecca Dalley, CEO of the Watercress Line, said: “The Steam Illuminations has become a much-loved tradition, combining the beauty of steam locomotives with cutting-edge lighting technology. This year, visitors will be treated to an even more dazzling display with the introduction of the Snowlight Cascade. As the train glides through the countryside, passengers will experience a delightful snowfall effect, adding a whole new level of wonder.

“We are incredibly excited to bring the magic of the Snowlight Cascade to Steam Illuminations – it’s an unforgettable experience that captures the spirit of the festive season. We can’t wait to see the smiles on the faces of our passengers as they enjoy this charming addition to the event.”

Steam Illuminations is fantastic fun for friends, families, couples, and corporate gatherings, with a brilliant ‘sound to light’ show inside every festive carriage. Thousands of sparkling LED lights synchronise with passengers’ LED wristbands to create a kaleidoscope of different colours and flashing patterns.

The interactive experience will be hosted by the legendary ‘Voiceover Man’ (as heard on Britain’s Got Talent and X-Factor), who will keep everyone entertained with merry music, corny cracker jokes, and encourage passengers to compete against each other in the singalong FlashyOke game.

The delightful Festive Canopy of Lights also returns this year in every carriage, bringing the light show inside the train to add to the thrilling atmosphere.

The Watercress Line’s Christmas hits will play until 28 December; and from 29 December, there will be favourite pop anthems from the 1960s to present day, encouraging visitors to sing, dance, and make merry!

Steam Illuminations lighting designer Simon Horn combined his knowledge of The Watercress Line with his technical expertise to create the GPS-enabled internal and external festive lighting display. He has worked with some of the UK’s greatest pop acts, including Westlife, Olly Murs and The Pogues on their light shows.

The Steam Illuminations depart from either Alresford or Alton and complete a round trip. The journey lasts approximately 1 hour 45 minutes – and look out for the ‘singing’ Christmas trees at Alresford!

Festive treat boxes, filled with delicious seasonal treats, and drinks boxes can be pre-ordered and collected on arrival at the station before departure.

Rebecca added: “Steam Illuminations often sells out quickly, so please book your tickets online as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this enchanting journey through a winter wonderland at The Watercress Line this festive season.”
