This summer, The Watercress Line is set to captivate arts and crafts enthusiasts with a series of vibrant, art-themed events. From open-air painting sessions to curated gallery exhibits, visitors are in for a treat as the heritage railway transforms into a hub of creative activity.
On the 20th and 21st of July, the railway will host local artists who will be working ‘en plein air’ at all four stations. The event will feature returning art societies and, for the first time, the Winchester Art Club, whose members will capture the picturesque scenes along the line. This unique opportunity allows visitors to watch artists at work in the charming setting of the historic railway.
In addition to the live art, The Goods Shed at Alresford Station will be home to The Guild of Railway Artists Exhibition on the same dates. This exhibition showcases stunning railway-themed artworks, many of which will be available for purchase. It’s a must-visit for anyone with a love for trains and art.
The Watercress Line is also introducing its very own Makers’ Market this summer. Held at Alresford Station forecourt on July 20th and August 17th, the market features over 20 stalls offering high-quality, handmade, and locally designed products. Visitors can expect a diverse array of artisan goods, perfect for those seeking unique and inspiring creations.
Another highlight of the summer programme is the collaboration with Hampshire Open Studios. From August 17th to 26th, a newly created collective of 16 local artists will display and sell their work in a gallery-style event in The Goods Shed at Alresford Station. This curated event promises to be a feast for the eyes, showcasing the best of local talent.
