Events Meet and Greet Team Member

The Watercress Line is a living museum. Its visitors gain many opportunities to experience and learn about the role played by railways and steam power in the development of the communities, industry and commerce in the Alresford to Alton area of the Hampshire countryside while also enjoying a range of heritage, family and enthusiast events throughout the year … while also enjoying the ultimate family day out! The Watercress Line’s volunteers are its back-bone.

They work alongside a small number of specialist employed staff to:

1. manage and operate the railway, and to develop these professional skills

2. deliver all the commercial activities and visitor events including education and museum

3. restore and preserve the heritage rolling stock, structures, equipment, archives and artefacts.

Role Title:
Events Meet & Greet Team Member
Location:
Ropley (environs of its Station Gates / Mobile Ticket Office), also Alresford (station/car-park), and Alton (platform entrance)
Time Agreed:
Days: vary, depending on the annual Events calendar of the railway, and include weekends and weekdays.
Time: usually 08:00-16:00.
Typically volunteers are expected to do 1 day per month, to cover most events that run at weekends for 1 to 3 days, e.g. Antique Fair, Galas.
Additionally, volunteers are asked to do a minimum 1 day, preferably 2 days, during WCL’s few major multi-day Events (that typically run 7+ days) e.g. Day-Out-With-Thomas, and Steam Illuminations.
Purpose and Business Objective:
“To deliver excellent customer service and so promote the railway by welcoming visitors when they arrive”
… by checking tickets, issuing wrist bands, gifts, etc.,
and by helping and directing visitors who haven’t pre-booked to Ticket Office
and by being a first contact point for help and assistance needed by visitors.
Tasks to include:
• Set up tables and chairs each day in gazebos, and end-of-day pack-away.
• Scan tickets, and providing patient helpful answers to all questions
• Issue vouchers (if any relevant), and giving out gifts (if any relevant)
• Be aware of visitors’ personal safety within the station area.
• At some events e.g. Steam Illuminations: Hand-over to customers their pre-ordered food & drink packages.

Reporting to:
The Events Meet-&-Greet team leader (currently Guy Perry) incl for rostering, and on-the-day to the on-duty Events Meet-&-Greet team leader or deputy.
A volunteer in this role cannot:
• Be under the influence of Alcohol or Drugs
A volunteer in this role should avoid:
• Using mobile phones while on duty in public spaces
A volunteer in this role ideally:
(is/has/can …)
• Fit and well as you’ll be on your feet most of the day.
• Friendly and welcoming. Able to resolve any issues that arise calmly.
• Enjoys working outside whatever the weather and has their own all-weather clothing!
(A Hi-Vis Vest is provided.)

  • All volunteers must sign in at the start of, and sign-out at the end of, their role’s rostered periods.
  • Volunteers must read and abide by the conduct guidance set out in the WCL Volunteer Handbook.
  • Where specific departmental health and safety rules apply it is the volunteer’s responsibility to maintain awareness and to operate by those rules at all times when on site.
  • Certifications and Qualifications required in specific roles must be current and complete.
