Train Care Carriage Interior Cleaner
The Watercress Line is a living museum. Its visitors gain many opportunities to experience and learn about the role played by railways and steam power in the development of the communities, industry and commerce in the Alresford to Alton area of the Hampshire countryside while also enjoying a range of heritage, family and enthusiast events throughout the year … while also enjoying the ultimate family day out! The Watercress Line’s volunteers are its backbone.
They work alongside a small number of specialist employed staff to:
1. manage and operate the railway, and to develop these professional skills
2. deliver all the commercial activities and visitor events including education and museum
3. restore and preserve the heritage rolling stock, structures, equipment, archives and artefacts.

Time Agreed: | 8.30 to 4 Monday to Friday Sat & Sun 8 till 10
Volunteers please attend regularly: we expect at least twice a month, ideally weekly. |
Purpose and Business Objective: | “To achieve an entirely positive reaction of all passengers boarding trains.
No complaints of lack of carriage cleanliness.”
Maintain the interiors of carriages to a good standard and cleanliness,
to enhance customer experience.
Looking for defects and hazards and reporting to Traincare C&W Workshops team.
Working in line with WCL/MHR Co.Ltd. policies and procedures. |
Tasks to include: | Daily:
• General cleaning duties: floor sweeping/mopping/vacuuming, table wiping/polishing, emptying rubbish bins, brush down seating, wiping/polish handles, etc.
• Window cleaning, polish wooden panels and interior doors
• Toilet cleaning etc.
Monthly, Seasonal, and Off-season:
• “deep-cleaning”
• Carpet and upholstery cleaning etc.

must be fit enough to perform this physical work & to carry equipment. |
Training Opportunities:
– competences to gain
(FOC to volunteer) | N.B. Personal Track Safety (PTS) competence is required for this role (to access carriages in the sidings i.e. not at platforms). PTS training will be offered to new volunteers within 4 weeks of starting.
The following competence development brief training courses are provided:
• Personal Safety (on platforms & in-carriages, incl small-space working)
• Emergency First Aid At Work
• Awareness of cleaning products handling (incl chemicals) and use of PPE
• some specialist cleaning: e.g. mould treatment |

A volunteer in this role cannot: | • Go trackside unless PTS trained or accompanied at all times by a PTS qualified person. |

- Certifications and Qualifications required in specific roles must be current and complete.
