Notes

The Mid Hants Railway operates a wide variety of Rolling Stock, ranging from former boat train carriages to coal wagons.

Our Wagon restoration department have, over many years, built up a fine rake of heritage wagons that are the envy of many preserved railways. Whilst no longer revenue earning stock, our fine assortment of operational wagons is regularly used during Galas and special timetabled demonstration services.

W2960 – Milk Tank

Status: Operational. The milk tank is numbered W2960 and was built in 1943 by the Great Western Railway at Swindon. The tank holds 3,00 gallons of milk and these were sent up each day (either as a block train of milk tanks or attached to passenger trains) from the West Country to depots in the London area. With no refrigeration equipment, the milk needed to be moved quickly before it went off. Before they were next loaded, the tanks had to be thoroughly cleaned out and sterilised. Freight Train

The Mid Hants Freight train aims to be typical of those operated in and around Hampshire circa 1960. This period ties in with the heritage setting at the railway and many of our wagons were then newly built, introduced by British Railways as a result of the “1955 Modernisation” plan. At this time older wagons from the pre 1948 nationalisation period were also operating. In 1960 virtually every railway station in the country had its own goods yard with a daily goods train bringing in coal for the local coal merchants to deliver to our homes, new agricultural equipment and
